Health Insurance Penetration Is Low

The health costs in India are increasing slowly but surely. In recent times, a number of diseases have surfaced, some of which even proved fatal. The treatment costs of the diseases combined with the hospitalization and the medication charges are very high. While a few people somehow manage to bear these expenses, many of them succumb to their illnesses after receiving half or no treatment at all. Majority of the people who discontinue their or their relative’s ministration, are forced to take this difficult decision due to the lack of funds to further support the medical treatment. Having a health insurance in such scenarios proves beneficial, where, besides the medical expenses, patients are facilitated with many other additional covers when they fall ill.

Causes of low health insurance penetration

  • There is a general assumption among people that they will be fit and fine throughout their lifetime and would rarely fall ill. The other assumption is people believe that it will only be the minor illnesses that will attack them, whose medical expenses can be easily managed.
  • Many people wait till the moment they actually fall prey to a severe medical condition to buy a health insurance policy.
  • Many companies nowadays provide corporate health insurance for their employees. While these policies are very efficient, but people fail to understand that in times of emergencies, they will need additional coverage that only having a corporate policy will not provide, as these policies are usually very basic.
  • People who have a health insurance policy  do not even consider upgrading their sum insured to cover the increasing costs of health risks in today’s era.
  • People do not view the health insurance policy as a protection cover for them in case of medical emergency. Majority of them purchase the policy just to avail the tax benefits under section 80D of the Income Tax Act.
  • People are reluctant to buy the top-up plans without realizing that they can give them added benefits over their primary sum insured.
  • As health insurance is optional, people tend to ignore it as a necessity.
