Kamal Haasan: Demands O Paneerselvam Resignation

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam is encountering troubled waters with the Directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption inquiring into an allegation of disproportionate asset and also under charges of misuse of power and using Defence’s air ambulance to airlift OPS’ brother who has been not well.

From the Madras High Court ordering inquiry to the Defence Minister snubbing him by not meeting him to now the opposition parties in the state demanding OPS’ resignation, OPS who was once former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s trusted lieutenant can say that he has seen better days.

Makkal Needi Mayam Chief Kamal Hassan today said, “The demand that OPS should resign is a valid one and I support it. A year back itself I had demanded it through my tweets. These activities by the government and its representatives is the reason for me entering politics and I insist that this government should itself not continue.”

The demand is similar to the demand of DMK working President MK Stalin who through a statement,”I am glad that MHC has asked DVAC to expedite the enquiry into the allegations of OPS and his family amassing wealth disappropriate to their known income based on a complaint filed DMK MP R.S Bharathi. Even after months of lodging complaint against OPS with DVAC, they are still in the initial stages of the investigations and this is because of the post occupied by OPS.”

Stalin further demanded that OPS should resign or in the case of him being unwilling to resign the Chief Minister should recommend OPS’ removal to the governor.

Moreover, OPS is also in the eye of the storm with opposition criticising about OPS making use of the defence’ air ambulance to airlift his sick brother for treatment purposes.

“Providing air ambulance to OPS’s relative is like misusing the state property and even MGR had used a private jet for his medical reason,” said Kamal Hassan criticising the Deputy Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman did not meet OPS who had gone to Delhi with Mafoi Pandiarajan and KP Munnusamy and before heading to meet Nirmala Sitharaman OPS had told the press that his purpose of the visit was a personal one to thank Nirmala Sitharaman for providing the air ambulance for his sick brother.

Though OPS and team waiter for 30 minutes they were not given an audience with the Defence Minister and the Ministry had later sent,Appointment was given to Shri V. Maitreyan, MP Rajya Sabha.

OPS is known to maintain a cordial relationship with the BJP and on various instances has been seen speaking or making social media posts supporting the BJP. But this sudden sidelining by BJP’s leader raises the question of OPS falling out of favour.
